You've probably heard plenty about how important search
engine rankings are in promoting your online business. You probably
know all about how tough it is to get top rankings-especially on
competitive keywords-and how getting your website ranked high on
search engines is a job best left to professionals.
However, there are a few things you can do yourself-even with
no technical knowledge-to improve your rankings. Here are five simple
things anyone can do to get more traffic for their website-no matter
your technological expertise.
Post on a few forums. That's right-go to a few forums, post
some thoughtful responses and offer some advice about your industry,
and put your link at the bottom of your signature. That's the most
important part. Simply put, high
rankings are a popularity contest. Search engines are looking
for the best sites for every keyword search-and they automatically
assume that most people have figured out what those sites are already.
They look for sites with lots of links from other sites-and sites
with a fair amount of traffic already. The more your links are out
in other websites, the better placed your website will be.
Write some articles.
The article is a powerful tool in generating search engine traffic.
Why? Because search engines care about content. The more content
you have on your site, the more search-engine-friendly it will be.
Your content should be keyword targeted. This means you should give
some thought to what keywords people might type in when looking
for your site, and then write an article based on that keyword.
Your articles should be informational in tone; they should try to
solve a common problem or offer some valuable advice. They shouldn't
have more than a 2% keyword content; any more than 2% and the keywords
are too noticeable to readers. More than 4% is "stuffing"
and is penalized by search engines. They should be well-written
and the keywords should
be practically invisible. The more people find your content useful,
the more they'll link to your site.
Submit your articles to online venues. There are quite a
few article directories that will allow you to submit your articles-with
a link back to your site at the end, of course. This works the same
way the forum technique does-by establishing you as an expert and
getting your link in front of potential customers. The more sites
link to you, and the more traffic your site has, the better your
search engine rankings.
Submit your URL to web directories. Web directories can
help give you good one way links into your website. Some of the
better ones charge fees but you will still find some free ones worth
submitting to. Start off with DMOZ,
Yahoo, Skaffe and BOTW.
Make sure your title tags
are descriptive. The "title" of your website is the
blue link that appears when someone does a search for your site.
In coding terms, it's the text that goes between the <title>
and the </title> tags. Your title should not be something
like "my home page." Nobody will want to click on that-and
it has no relevant keywords. A strong title has some descriptions,
and includes a keyword. For example, if you're a doctor with your
own practice, you could use "Joseph Brown, MD: Experienced
Family Practice Doctor Serving the Baltimore Area." This gives
you a key phrase-family practice or family practice doctor-and also
a location, so people searching for you will know that you're in
their area.
Improving your search engine rankings isn't quick and easy-but
there are a few things you can do to help that won't take too much
time or money. Follow these simple tips, and be patient for the
results-good SEO always takes
time.
