Transcription of video

Melissa Graham: Each year, 250,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the U.K. Doctors estimate that one in three of us have it at some point in our lives. Today is all about people coming together, celebrating life and raising money to help find a cure, and help people survive.

Lorraine O'Malley (From stage): We raised just over £60,000. We did this with 22 teams, and because of their efforts and support, Redditch was the second highest fund raiser in the country which is a tremendous effort from you all.

Poem (From stage): I walk excitedly not demure, I walked to help find a cure. I walk for everyone to see, I walk for you, I walk for me.

Melissa Graham: People you see behind me, these are the survivors. This is the survivors' lap of honor. These people have all faced the biggest challenge to date and have come through to tell the tale.

Interview with Relay For Life Team 'At The Movies'

Melissa Graham: Now, Michelle, you are the team leader, aren't you?
Michelle: I am, yes.
Melissa Graham: Ok, so what's the name of the team?
Michelle: We're called At the Movies, and we are from AT&T.
Melissa Graham: And who we have got? We have Bugs, Princess Leah, Chewbacca- who else have we got?
Michelle: We have Han Solo walking around, we have Spider-Man, we have the Scare Crow from The Wizard of Oz. We've got Snow White, Shrek, Indiana Jones a whole host of people!
Melissa Graham: So how much money did your team raise so far?
Michelle: So far we've raise just over £3,000.
Melissa Graham: So, fellas am I right to understand this, that somebody all throughout the night is gonna be around that track non stop?
Han Solo: Yes. There's always somebody walking around for 24 hours. Yes.
Melissa Graham: And have you've sorted the shifts out, to do in hours?
Han Solo: Yeah, we've got a shift sheet on the table and I think that the moment when you feel like walking and can do as much as you can, and everyone gets on the track for an hour I think.
Melissa Graham: So, nobody is getting too beered up then?
Spiderman: We wouldn't do that anyway. I'm gotta save the world if something happens, you see.
Melissa Graham: That's right!

Interview with Relay For Life Team 'Ozzie's Jailbirds'

Lynne: Ozzie was my husband. It was diagnosed with terminal cancer last April and he died in December. We did a very positive thing last year by coming and joining in Relay For Life and we raised £5,000 last year.

My sister has done a lot of fundraising at her work - she works at a big company. She's done Name the bear' and raffles - lots of things behind the scenes to raise cash.

Relay For Life 'The Banner of Hope"

Sarah: It's to make a banner for outside and it's a banner of hope to put around the track for support. You put the glove on and put your handprint on it.
Melissa Graham: How did you get involved in cancer research?
Sarah: I saw it in the local paper and just volunteered really - they were short of volunteers so I thought I'd come along and help.

Interview with 'Dr. Ashley Martin - Birmingham University"

Dr. Ashley Martin: The work we actually performing in Birmingham is attempting to find biomarkers which are proteins in the blood that will tell us that the patient has cancer at a much earlier stage.

We've been quite successfully in this with colon cancer, hepatic-cellular carcinoma and lung cancer and in the last year we have published several papers in good quality journals where we have identified markers that are better than those that are currently available and in clinical use.

As everyone knows, clinical trials take a long time, so we are collecting samples we're performing the analysis and then we have to validate them and then we have to take them forward we then apply for more funds, which is for what this event is about today, to get money, to perform larger surveys, so we can validate with the sorts of numbers that you need to do these trials.

We would be talking about thousands of samples, we are currently working on hundreds but we need to take it on and do larger surveys, and of course they're very expensive.

You have to get patient cooperation, doctors' cooperation; you have to collect the samples and store them as well as perform the analysis. It takes a long time and a lot of money, which is why events like today's are so important.

Interview with Lorraine O'Malley

Lorraine O'Malley: It's tremendous - We got more people this year, hopefully more money and more fun and laughter, so it should be great!
Melissa Graham: So, how did you actually get into Relay For Life?
Lorraine O'Malley: Well, I lost my sister of cancer 5 years ago, a lady who I work with at AT&T she initially came up to me and said "Cancer Research UK" something about a team, and would you like to come to a meeting?" I went along to this meeting and she gave me a job description. That was it. I was hooked.

Melissa Graham: How long does this take to get involved, to organize? There's a lot of organization.
Lorraine O'Malley: We started slowly in February and then it gets a little bit or a ramp up towards the relay. For the past 6 weeks it's been virtually two nights a week dedicated to this, plus time in the day, all our committee giving time and their partners have supported them in all of this as well.

Interviews on the track
Woman: This is your self awareness lap, where you have to be aware of your own body.
Melissa Graham: How naughty! Thanks a lot, girls! Cheers!

Bacardi Breezers: Hopefully the whole team will raise £6,000.
Melissa Graham: My Goodness!
Bacardi Breezers: Not just today, but with the sponsors and everything we've done.

Melissa Graham: So, how much money have you raised?
Teenage Boy: As a team we've got £1,461, and half of that came from a backpack we did all together as a team.

Woman1: So far we've raise just over £5,000?
Woman2: Yeah.
Melissa Graham: My Goodness, that's fantastic!

Melissa Graham: That's what I'm talking about. Everyone is here, the sun's shining, we've got ice cream in hand and we are raising a shed load of cash!
