Four places you can get good links:

Forget about bad links, here are four places to get great links. Not only that you also join recognised schemes and get logos you can use on your website too.

SafeBuy - SafeBuy is the only recognised UK accreditation scheme for web retailers. This is a good link to get for your website and a good association to join if you are eligible. First you must be checked and approved, but if you can be accepted you'll get a good link to your site and you can become part of the only credible organisation in the UK when it comes to ECommerce and standards in web retailing.

With an Office of Fair Trading (OFT) stamp of approval on the SafeBuy scheme you're getting the real deal. SafeBuy members receive monthly newsletters, warnings of dodgy suppliers, tips on ECommerce law and more. Placing the SafeBuy logo in a prominent place on your site can even help with conversion rates. For only £111.63 a year to join its a bargain. You can sign up here https://www.safebuy.org.uk/how-to-join.html

Safe Shopping Network - A USA based ECommerce site appraisal service. They do a personal percentage points score on your site. You get a seal of approval logo, and they also place your site in their safe shopping directory. They will accept UK sites and do quarterly reviews to check your site is all fine and dandy. Site URL is http://www.safeshoppingnetwork.com

TRUSTe - The major official privacy protection accreditation people in the USA (and worldwide) for websites and email. Like SafeBuy they are very thorough and hands on with applications. Their directory is a great place to be listed and if you take time to check out who else is listed there you will quickly see why. Their logo is world renowned. Visit TRUSTe at http://www.truste.org

Hacker Safe - Relatively new to us in the UK but making a big impact all over the web. ScanAlert's Hacker Safe service is FBI approved. What message does that send to your visitors? Right, your site's safe and you can be trusted. It runs a daily Anti Hacker scan that checks your website. The only downside is that it is relatively expensive to join, but some clients are seeing people buying more often and spending more when they do - you can't argue with that! See http://www.scanalert.com

3. Tagging and http://del.icio.us

What's this all about then? Bit weird sounding I know, but it is a social bookmarking network that has become increasingly important in recent months.

To understand why this website is important, imagine the ideal world for search engines. They would manually rank websites based on their quality, popularity and content. The next best thing is the public impartially deciding which sites are good. OK now here's where tagging fits in. It is a way of bookmarking websites you like under keywords you choose. It's done by downloading the del.icio.us plugin to your main web browser. The difference to the 'Add to favourites' bookmark you save in your usual browser is that the tag goes into a public database both you and others can access. OK now can you see the appeal?

No one can prove it, but whether a site has been tagged or not, 'could' be a factor for major search engines.

It's easy to see the attraction to search engines as it's a public vote and it's data they can access.

Having lots of people tag your website means that you are added to people's lists of sites they like. The off-shoot is that when their friends check through these tag-lists they too will come across your website info. Remember being tagged means your site is being vetted as a decent site and is a vote in your favour from peers. The net result is the potential for additional direct traffic for websites. For some high traffic blog sites del.icio.us can be a top 3 referrer of visitors so tagging has value on more than one level.

To start tagging sites you like or to find out how many tags your site has visit http://del.icio.us and download the plugin.
