The Man Who Coined the
Phrase

Bruce Clay is the man who came up with the term "search engine
optimization." But we'll get to that in a second.
It took Bruce longer than that to get there, of course. Prior to
his entry into Internet marketing, Bruce worked for a long time
in information technology, as a general manager, and as an entrepreneur.
His diverse background includes computers and technology, sales
and marketing, and management. He worked as the GM for Acer in America,
as the president of the American division of a multinational company,
and as the founder of several start-ups.
He's been in search marketing for over eleven years, and he's credited
with helping to build the industry. During the 1990's, Bruce worked
for software company Boole & Babbage. The company was making
a strong effort at the time to evaluate and optimize their own systems
for the web. The term "optimization" was commonly used
in Bruce's workplace. Search marketing writer and optimizer Danny
Sullivan says that Bruce first used the word in conjunction with
search engines in an email to him. Bruce himself is rather casual
about the credit he gets; he believes that the phrase "search
engine optimization" belongs to the industry.
At any rate, he has other things on his mind. Bruce currently runs
Bruce Clay, Inc.-a multi-national Internet business consultancy
with offices in America, England, Australia, and South Africa. If
that's not enough, they're looking to expand into Russia, Argentina,
and China as well.
The company offers consulting services on all facets of Internet
business, including search engine optimization, pay-per-click campaigns,
branding, analytics, and website design. They also offer corporate
training sessions in all their offices. Bruce also offers SEOToolSet,
a collection of search marketing tools including keyword analytics,
a site mapping tool, a link mapping program, and a path mapping
tool. The SEOToolSet is available on his website, BruceClay.com,
on a subscription basis.
Bruce keeps a high profile in the search marketing community. He
was featured in Wired! Magazine's "Complete Guide to GoogleMania!"
issue in 2004, as well as USAToday's "Gunning For Search Engines"
article the same year. He and representatives from his company attend
ad:Tech, WebmasterWorld, Search Engine Strategies, and other worldwide
conferences as speakers. Bruce Clay, Inc. is also the corporate
sponsor for Danny Sullivan's Search Marketing Expo.
Overall, Bruce has had a strong influence on the SEO industry from
the first. Those in the field agree that the industry would look
very different today without him.
