Danny Sullivan: The Voice of Search

You could call Danny Sullivan the Carl Sagan of search—he’s been making it understandable and accessible to everyday web users for over a decade. His expertise is also widely sought by the media, webmasters, and SEO professionals. He’s been quoted in Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The New Yorker, and USA Today, and he’s written thousands of articles about search engine optimization.
It all started in 1995, when Danny was managing a web marketing company. He had a dissatisfied client—one who kept complaining that he couldn’t find the site Danny had designed for him in WebCrawler. He wanted an explanation—and Danny didn’t have one.
In those days, there were no solid answers to why some sites came up higher than others in search engine rankings. But it bothered Danny that he couldn’t give a good answer to his client. So he started a study of how search engines indexed web pages. He published his results online, in “A Webmaster’s Guide to Search Engines,” one of the first how-to books for SEO. The reaction from both the media and ordinary users prompted Danny to expand his guide into a website, SearchEngineWatch.com.
SearchEngineWatch.com expanded to include news and articles about
current trends in SEO. Danny came from a journalism background,
and eventually the website became a news source as well as a how-to
reference. As time went on, it became one of the most trusted sources
of unbiased SEO information on the web.
In 1997, Danny sold his website to Mecklermedia, which later became Jupitermedia. This company expanded and began the Search Engine Strategies conferences, at which Danny played a major role as a speaker and chairman for many years. These conferences are widely attended by SEO professionals, and are considered one of the best networking opportunities out there for those in the industry.
In 2005, Jupitermedia sold the site to Incisive Media. Danny did
not object to the sale, and kept his contract until the end of 2006.
However, Danny and Incisive Media were unable to come to terms about
his contract for 2007 and beyond. Danny left SearchEngineWatch.com
in December of 2006, to an outpouring of sympathy not only from
the SEO community, but also from readers all over the world.
But everyone was soon smiling again when Danny set up Search
Engine Land which has rapidly become one of the most popular
SEO industry websites.
Danny is originally from Southern California. He married an Englishwoman and has been living in Britain with his family for the past eight years.
