David Naylor—The
Wild Side of SEO

One of the most high-profile names in search engine optimization, David Naylor (or DaveN, as his online handle goes) doesn’t see the point in having a website if it isn’t number 1 in search engine rankings.
He got into search engine
optimization around 1998. He had been working as a database
programmer, when his company asked him to manage their online presence
as well. He learned the basics of search engine optimization, then
switched jobs, working for an ISP firm as a web designer. In 2003,
he decided to buy out his company—and put all his efforts
into search engine optimization.
Today, David Naylor’s company consults with many companies, including pharmaceuticals, retail outlets, and more. He’s also a strong affiliate marketer, as well as a website designer and programmer. He moderates at several forums and posts regularly at his blog, www.davidnaylor.co.uk.
David’s techniques are more controversial than some in the SEO community. He admits to using both white and black hat SEO—whatever it takes to get a site top rankings—and that his sites have been banned from Google and other search engines in the past. In a memorable interview with Aaron Wall, himself a high-profile SEO expert, David admitted to several less-than-pure-white search engine optimization practices, including link spamming and using disposable domain names.
Still, with professional and client sites, David advocates building websites for users—not search engines. He also advocates going easy on the link exchanges. Even though multiple links to your website can drive up Google rankings as well as traffic, links to websites from the wrong “neighborhood” can do you more harm than good.
David puts plenty of effort into moderating and posting at SEO forums. Although many SEO gurus are reluctant to disclose their techniques, David tends to be a bit more willing to describe his methods—which makes him less than popular with some in the SEO industry, who prefer that advanced SEO techniques not be shared. Despite this, David continues to be fairly open about his optimization practices, and feels he comes up with his best ideas through talking about SEO with other up-and-coming industry professionals.
Today, David continues to be a leader in the industry. He is known for accurately predicting changes in search engine algorithms, often before many other top names in the business can. He’s continually in demand for consulting and design services, and is a highly visible personality in the search engine optimization business.
