SEO On the Slopes

Elizabeth earned a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing at the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. This was around the beginning of the Internet boom—Yahoo!, Amazon, and other prominent e-commerce sites were just beginning to take off. The growth potential of the World Wide Web was an attractive draw for any college grad with entrepreneurial ambitions. For the next six years, Elizabeth worked as a search-marketing consultant and web copywriter.

Another high note in Elizabeth’s career was as skiing editor for About.com. She applied to the job on a whim, after stumbling on the list of available topics online. For a few years, she wrote about ski trips she’d taken, managed other freelance writers, and got her start in travel journalism. Today, she still loves to write for sports and active travel sites, and works it into her schedule whenever she can.

Danny Sullivan personally recruited Elizabeth to work at Search Engine Watch, first as forum manager and overseer in 2004, then as Managing Editor of Search Engine Watch. Today, she still manages day-to-day operations of the site’s discussion forums, as well as news and other content for the site. She works hard to make sure archived information, current news, forum archives, and coverage—are accessible and easy to find. She’s also worked as moderator for the Search Engine Strategies tour, and organized and hosted Search Engine Watch LIVE! events for Incisive Media.

Elizabeth is passionate about vertical or “niche” markets, especially relating to outdoor and adventure sports. She feels that niche marketing will only continue to grow and become more specific. She believes that video and audio search is likely to be a breakout market in the next few years, and she’s excited about the growth of travel forums, travelogues, and review sites where travelers come together to share tips and information.

Today, Elizabeth makes her home in Salt Lake City, Utah—the perfect place for an outdoor enthusiast. She’s still active in outdoor sports, especially skiing, and fits in active travel writing whenever she can. She thrives in her job at Search Engine Watch, enjoying the flexibility and freedom of working for a major online publication. She’s lucky to have a career in which she can incorporate her interests in search marketing, travel, sports, vertical markets, and more. It’s clear that Elizabeth’s success comes from a love of her job as well as search-marketing know-how.
