Michael Gray: That’s “Graywolf” to You

Michael Gray (a.k.a. “Graywolf”) has never been one to shy away from a good time. When he was younger he pulled some crazy stunts, including dressing up as a bride for a pep rally at a retail store where he worked and playing with fire in his bedroom at home, ultimately setting his entire second floor on fire. Today, he sets the web on fire on Graywolf’s SEO Blog, where no search marketing topic is too controversial.

Michael built his first website in 1997. He’ll admit it was not very good—but it taught him a thing or two about web design. A year later, his employer singled him out to set up and manage their new website. Michael didn’t know much about websites at the time, but his boss believed that since he knew a thing or two about sales and management already and seemed to have a head for computers, he was the best choice.

Michael was up to the challenge, however. He took some classes in computer programming and within a few weeks, he felt like he was at least halfway competent. A few weeks after getting the assignment, he realized that the company was paying around $10,000 per month for an outside company to host a shopping cart program on their site. The site itself wasn’t making that much per month in sales—and their traffic was less than a thousand visitors per month. The numbers didn’t add up—and Michael decided to do something about it. He rewrote the shopping cart program, saving his company over a hundred thousand a year along the way. Within a few years, the site was attracting between 30,000 and 50,000 visitors a day—and was making the company around $25 million annually.

In 2002, while looking for the answer to a programming problem, Michael found himself on WebmasterWorld—where he first learned about search engine optimization. He threw himself into this new field, learning as much as he could—and increasing his company’s revenue by 20% that year. It’s not surprising that he started thinking about branching off on his own as an SEO consultant—and in 2004, that’s what he did.

Michael also started to get into affiliate marketing around this time. To make some extra cash, he started dabbling in the field—and soon realized how much revenue he had been missing. Today, he splits his time between working as a search marketing consultant for clients and working on his own affiliate marketing projects.
