Jill Whalen: High-Powered
SEO Consultant, Search Marketing Guru, and Mom

Jill Whalen credits her introduction to search marketing to her children.
She had been interested in computers from an early age—one of her first jobs out of college was as a word processor for Prime Computers. However, when she had her first child in 1987, she decided to become a stay-at-home mom. A few years later, in 1994, she wanted to make connections with other moms—and she set up a parenting chat room over IRC (Internet Relay Chat). To go with the chat room, she set up a parenting website. Naturally, she wanted people to be able to find her site—so she learned how to get it ranked high in the chat rooms.
By 1995, Jill had made her first forays into professional website design. She built sites for a few small businesses, and included search engine optimization services with her design package. It wasn’t called “SEO” back then—more like “submission services.” Within two years, Jill had given up on the design side of the business, and had focused her energies on search marketing alone.
In the past twelve years as a search marketing expert, Jill has
founded two SEO consulting companies: Highrankings.com
and Search Creative. She’s also behind one of the most well-read
newsletters in the search marketing industry, HighRankings Advisor.
She also runs and administers the High Rankings Search Engine
Optimization forum, a busy gathering place both for SEO experts
and those looking to get into the business. Discussions on her forum
have taught and inspired dozens of rising stars in the search marketing
industry, and Jill is always open about sharing her expertise. She’s
also a prominent speaker at SEO forums around the country and the
world, and runs acclaimed seminars on search marketing.
Jill believes that in order to get your site a good ranking, you have to give the search engines what they want—relevance. All search engines are simply trying to find the most relevant sites for certain keywords. Jill believes that if you make your site the most relevant, you win.
