Jim Boykin: More Jobs Than
You Could Count, But Just One Stuck

Jim Boykin’s had a varied life. Born in upstate New York
in 1971, Jim went to college at Rider University and majored in
marketing. He got into computers early on, working for the help
desk at his school and learning DOS and BASIC. Throughout his tenure
as a computer consultant as a student, he worked on just about every
assignment given by the computing department at his school—and
soon became the go-to guy for both students and professors.
Jim left college just a semester before graduating and headed up to Alaska. There, he got a restaurant job as a dishwasher. He was promoted to line cook, and before long he was the assistant kitchen manager. But he had a serious case of wanderlust, and didn’t stay long in his new position before taking off for New York. He got a job as a shift manager for Stewarts, and met a girl with a thirst for adventure to match his.
Jim traveled out to California, back to New York, out to Texas, and to several national parks including Shenandoah, Big Bend, and Grand Tetons. In this time he drove around the U.S. twice, married his girlfriend, bought an R.V., and had an incredibly varied list of jobs, including ski lift operator, bus boy, housekeeper, room service deliveryman, route manager for Schwan’s, bookkeeper, night maintenance, waiter, and store clerk—and that’s just the short list.
In the beginning of 1999, Jim logged on to the Internet for the first time—and he knew he’d come home. He bought a book called Learn HTML in 24 Hours and created his first website—WeBuildPages.com. His plan was to design websites. However, he soon discovered that his talents were more heavily weighted toward Internet marketing than graphic design. He got a job with a local web design company who hired him as their Internet marketing specialist—but wouldn’t let him design.
Jim then bounced from company to company for a while, and when his latest employer, Aimster/Madster, went out of business, he had a choice to make: work for another company, or go it alone? He chose to branch off on his own, investing all his time in his old web design company, WeBuildPages.com. He hasn’t looked back since.
Today, Jim’s company, WeBuildPages,
is one of the foremost online companies in the world for link
building strategies and search engine optimization. Jim also
runs his own increasingly popular SEO and link building blog at
www.jimboykin.com.
He and his family live in upstate New York, in the house where
he grew up.
