Lee Odden: Top Ranking
SEO

Lee Odden has been in search marketing for the past nine years, and is widely considered one of the luminaries in the field. He’s the founder and president of TopRank Online Marketing, a search and Internet marketing firm that’s helped hundreds of high-profile companies increase their visibility on the web. He specializes in search engine optimization, blog marketing, and online public relations—and he’s the best at what he does.
Lee got his start in online sales in 1996. Within a year, he’d discovered search marketing. Before founding TopRank, Lee worked as Vice President of Development and Online Marketing for an agency based in Minneapolis. In 2001, he decided to branch off and form his own company. He describes the past five years as an incredible learning experience.
In 2001, when he founded TopRank, Lee already had some experience
working with search engine
optimization and pay-per-click. He describes search engine optimization
as a very different process back then—you add keywords to
title and Meta tags and make sure they’re worked into your
content, then you submit the pages to search engines and watch your
site address climb in the rankings. Now it’s not so simple—but
Lee has managed to keep on top of the changes.
Lee keeps a high profile in the search engine industry, with interviews in U.S. News and World Report, Computerworld.com, and The Economist, among others. He’s also a writer, with articles in DM News, Practical eCommerce Magazine, The Business Journal, and many others. He keeps a popular online marketing blog on his TopRank website, and has also written for Business Blogs Consulting.
Lee is a strong proponent of blog
marketing. He believes that blog software comes with plenty
of search-engine-friendly characteristics, including a decent HTML
structure and a link-friendly format. He points out that most bloggers
don’t optimize their blogs for search engines, and believes
that if they bring search marketing principles to bear on their
blogs, many bloggers will see very positive results.
When asked if he’d recommend his field to those looking into careers, Lee half-jokingly responds that aspiring SEO’s should look into being doctors and lawyers instead. It’s a challenging field—one that’s highly competitive and always changing. Just when an SEO thinks he’s gotten his formula for high ranks perfected, the search engines change their algorithms. Such a field isn’t for the faint of heart—but it’s an invigorating challenge for those who are up to it.
