Matt Cutts: Google’s
Top Dog

Matt Cutts is one
of the co-inventors of Google’s search engine technology,
and works on webmaster and webspam issues at Google today. He is
considered something of a celebrity, not only in the world of SEO
but in mainstream culture as well, because of his key role at Google.
His blog entries about search engine optimization issues are widely
followed in the SEO community.
Matt’s first exposure to search came in 1999, when he was
studying for his PhD in movement tracking and computer graphics
at the University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill. He had two elective credits to fill, and for one he
took a library sciences class on information retrieval and search
engines. He was instantly hooked—throughout the class, he
was scribbling down ideas of his own to try. He changed his major
to information retrieval, and before long he’d left school
to work for Google. He did not complete the PhD degree, but did
earn a Masters. He also has degrees in computer science and mathematics
from the University of Kentucky.
A recent web-based rumor claimed that Matt has a government security
clearance, and is a liaison between the Department of Defense and
Google. Matt explained in an
interview that he did in fact have security clearance at one
point—he worked for a semester at the Department of Defense
when he was a student. However, he has no connections to the government
and his security clearance lapsed years ago.
Today, Matt is often seen in the press, handling questions about
search engine optimization on Google’s behalf. As a result,
he’s seen as the face of Google, which gives him a certain
amount of notoriety and he’s revered in the search community.
Matt cares about webmasters and about making Google a better search
tool, and listens to users’ comments and criticisms about
the company on his blog.
Matt’s blog
is the only place online where someone involved with Google talks
about it in detail. It’s closely followed by those in the
SEO industry, and Matt uses his forum to promote and educate about
white-hat search engine optimization. He’s outspoken about
unscrupulous search engine optimization tactics, and gives plenty
of advice about solid
SEO practices. He covers Google-related issues as well, although
he insists his blog reflects his opinions and not those of his company.
