Michael McDonald: Providing Content to
Millions
When Michael McDonald first encountered the Web, it was not love
at first sight. He was in college at the University of Kentucky,
studying for a BA in Education/English. That was around 1994, and
Michael has vivid memories of wandering around the school’s
computer lab, looking for an open terminal amongst hundreds of caffeine-addicted
tech junkies who hadn’t moved from their seats in days, their
eyes transfixed to the screen, their pasty skin bathed in green
light from the monitors. It was not a pretty picture. Michael referred
to these people as “the lost.”
He never planned to become one of them. But then around two years later, in 1996, he got into Quake. This action game was played in an interactive online environment, where players could forge alliances and take each other on in real time. Michael found the fiercely competitive, lightning-paced environment addictive—and it was available 24/7. He believes that his subsequent interest in e-business, online forums, and websites stems from his first love affair with online gaming—e-business, after all, is the most competitive, fast-paced, interactive online environment there is.
Before long, Michael had ditched his plans to be a teacher and became involved in e-commerce. In 2000, he joined iEntry—an online publication company that provides business newsletters to web developers, small business owners, information technology pros, and more. In the beginning, he describes iEntry as a small operation based out of a single office. Today, iEntry delivers 50 million e-newsletters per month to over four million unique, opt-in subscribers. It’s an immense website. And Michael is the managing editor—and the Director of Operations.
But that’s not the only thing on Michael’s plate these
days. He’s also the managing editor for all of iEntry’s
vast network of satellite content sites—including WebProNews,
an e-commerce news website
that includes breaking stories on topics relevant to search marketing,
e-business, and other Internet and technical issues, as well as
numerous blogs, insider reports, interviews with industry experts,
and more. His job includes reviewing and approving content for all
sites, as well as handling staffing, answering queries, interacting
with clients, and keeping track of subscription rates and visitor
statistics for each website. It’s a wonder he gets time to
eat lunch.
And if that’s not enough, Michael is also the moderator for WebProWorld, a popular online forum master site with forums on general marketing strategy, Google Adwords, affiliate marketing, link exchanges, site design, IT topics, e-commerce, and many more. He’s a strong presence on the forum, generous with advice and information. If you can’t find him there, look for him as a speaker at pubcons all over the country. With all he has to do, he still finds time to share his knowledge with others—making him not only accomplished, but admirable as well.
