Mike Grehan: SEO and Storyteller Extraordinaire

If you ask Mike Grehan about his background before search marketing, he’ll start out by telling you that he was raised by Ninjas, Romanian circus performers, wolves, or people who sent him to school with a sandwich wrapped in a roadmap—and it gets crazier from there. Somewhere along the way you’ll pick up the fact that he went to college at Northumbria University in Newcastle, and that he worked in advertising and public relations for several firms before branching off on his own in 1996. He hasn’t looked back since.
Mike Grehan is one of the U.K.’s top search engine marketers.
He founded and worked as the marketing director of Smart Interactive,
Ltd.—the British wing of MarketSmart Interactive, Inc., one
of the world’s largest search marketing firms. He’s
also the author of Search
Engine Marketing: the Essential Best Practices Guide, one
of the industry’s leading publications on search engine marketing.
In 2004, Mike was voted one of the U.K.’s 100 most influential
people in Internet marketing, as the result of a poll of 22,000
search engine industry professionals in the country. He’s
the CEO of Searchvisible
Ltd, and is a sought-after speaker at SEO conferences around
the world.
On the promotional
site for his book, Mike’s bio claims that he is a noted
SEO because he has an exclusive “peek under the hood”
at search engine firms—he knows more about how the search
engines are programmed than any other search marketer. While many
self-proclaimed SEO gurus make similar claims, Mike’s has
a basis in fact. It all started with the kind of information he
was looking for in the late 90’s, when he was first learning
about search marketing.
In 1999, many of the “how to” books about search marketing used anecdotal evidence as opposed to scientific research. Mike was looking for scientifically researched info on how, exactly, search engines retrieved information. When he couldn’t find any how-to materials that were backed up by scientific research, he started out to find the information himself. He read scientific papers about information retrieval and tested what he learned from them on various search engines. When he first published his guide, he made sure that everything in it was backed up—either by current research papers or by experts in the field.
Today, Mike is considered one of the foremost experts in the field of SEO. He doesn’t let it get to his head, though; he’ll tell you he still stands in line at the supermarket with ordinary mortals. He still keeps in touch with Northumbria University, lecturing to undergraduate and post-graduate audiences. He also consults on a freelance basis.
