Shari Thurow: Combining Art and Science for
Search-Marketing Success

Shari Thurow went to college for life sciences. She got a degree in Genetics and Developmental Biology from the University of Illinois. Later, she got a Masters’ degree in Japanese and Asian Studies, where she learned a great deal about Japanese literature. She graduated with a solid background both in science and in the humanities.
Shari ventured into the scientific field right away and spent
almost 10 years working in labs. But by 1995, she found herself
working for an international transportation company. Her job was
to create marketing materials such as sales presentation visuals
and print materials. When the company decided to put up a website,
the design responsibilities were automatically given to her.
Shari says that she has been designing search engine optimized
sites from Day One of her online career. Danny Sullivan was
getting his start around the same time Shari launched her own online
career—and she learned the basics in his forums.
Shari worked as webmaster and marketing director for Grantastic
Designs, a full-service firm that both designed and optimized client
websites before setting up her own company Omni
Marketing Interactive which specializes in search-friendly,
user-friendly Web site design. She is always learning, however—she’s
currently back in school, getting a Masters’ degree in Library
and Information Sciences with a speciality in information retrieval.
Shari is of no doubt that her science background and passion for
it has helped give her the critical analysis skills that have proved
so useful in her current profession. As she likes to say "Math
is cool".
Shari has found a great deal of success in online marketing. She
has a 100% success rate in getting top rankings for her clients’
sites. She’s also the author of Search
Engine Visibility, a popular instruction book for designing,
writing, and programming a site that will show up in search rankings.
She’s currently finished the second edition of the book.
Shari is also visible in the search marketing community. She’s a popular speaker at conventions, making appearances at Search Engine Strategies and many more. She is also an online author, with articles in many online publications. She is well-versed in CSS, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, and other design software.
In search marketing and website design, Shari has found a specialty
that uses both the scientific, analytic skills she fostered as an
undergraduate in Biology, and the artistic talent and love of beauty
that attracted her to Japanese literature. It’s no wonder
she’s found so much success in her career—it’s
perfectly suited to her abilities and talents. Many search marketers
describe the business as both an art and a science—and there’s
little doubt Shari has mastered both.
