Shawn Hogan: Man of Principle
Shawn Hogan has been coding since he was nine years old—his first computer was a Commodore 64. He’s come a long way since then; at nineteen he founded Digital Point Solutions, a well-known and successful software provider based in San Diego, California. That was about ten years ago—and Shawn is still going strong.
Independence is something that runs in Shawn’s family. When Shawn was born, his parents chose to have the birth at home—without a midwife or attending physician. His parents had bought a book on giving birth, and believed they didn’t need extra help. Shawn learns this way himself—his advice to new SEO’s is to visit forums and absorb all the information they can on the subject.
Despite this do-it-yourself advice, however, Shawn is known to have made several significant contributions to the SEO industry that make it easier for people to plan a search marketing campaign. One of those is the keyword position tracking tool—a free tool that allows you to type in a keyword and see how frequently it’s used as a search term, along with suggestions for similar keywords and their rankings. This tool has revolutionized search, making it much easier to plan a marketing campaign around specific keywords. Other free tools available on Shawn’s Digital Point Solutions website include a hit counter, a tool that tracks the physical base for any website, the physical locations of your website’s visitors, the Google Adwords that will come up for a site, and much more.
Shawn attracted media attention in August of 2006 when Wired ran a front-page story on him entitled “Shawn Hogan, Hero.” The story discussed Shawn’s recent run-in with the MPAA, who alleged that Shawn had illegally downloaded the movie Meet the Fockers. They offered to settle for $2500. Shawn insisted he was innocent—he actually owns a legal copy of the DVD—and decided to take the battle to court instead. He believed strongly that the MPAA was abusing the system and targeting innocent web users without the funds to take the battle to court. In the article, Shawn was quoted as saying that he was willing to spend millions to fight the charge, on the basis of principle.
Today, Shawn lives in San Diego with his wife—his family has lived there for four generations. He spends much of his time working, but in his spare time he loves to snowboard.
