Todd Malicoat: There are no hats - only goals

Todd Malicoat
doesn’t remember how old he was when he got his first computer—but
he’s positive it was a TI-99. His uncle worked for the company,
and Todd got old hand-me-down computers from him. He used the computers
for games, and remembers doing some BASIC programming at that time—although
he’ll be the first to tell you that programming isn’t
his strong suit today.
Todd went to college at Northwood University, where he earned a double major in management information systems and business information. He went to college part time for over seven years, paying his way through school with a job as a waiter. His senior thesis was entitled “Planning, Developing, and Promoting a Website for Small Business.” He got his degree in 2003, but he’s been designing websites since 1997 and studying search engine optimization since 2001.
Todd runs Stuntdubl.com,
an online blog that’s popular in the search
marketing world. The handle “Stuntdubl” has been
his online alter ego for several years. He’s been credited
for dropping vowels before the trend took off online, with websites
such as Flickr. However, the name has been around long before Todd’s
search marketing career got off the ground. Todd was into music
from an early age, and he used it as a “DJ name” while
mixing hip-hop beats with friends. Todd also loves deep-sea fishing
on his days off.
He describes himself as very light shade gray hat,
(with buying links being the only term of service that he openly
violates), and admits to using his knowledge of Google algorithms
to his advantage to get his clients ranked high on search engines.
He has been known to say that he thinks there are no hats, only
goalsand that using your ethical practices as a unique selling
point for your SEO business is just as questionable of a business
practice as violating search engine guidelines. Todd sees white-hat
practices as conservative, black-hat practices as high-risk and
high-profit, but lacking in concern for the businesses they work
for, and himself as using a mixture of both to come up with a strategy
that is both highly competitive with reasonably low risk tolerance.
He describes his practices as light gray, but his philosophy is
based in the knowledge of, and highly empathetic to the more high
risk, high reward elements of SEO.
Despite this, Todd is a respected member of the search
marketing community. He’s been a forum moderator at WebmasterWorld,
a contributor to SEOToday, and holds a board position with
the Great Lakes Web Professionals. Today, Todd is a successful freelance
consultant who advises companies on all facets of online marketing,
including pay-per-click advertising, search engine optimization,
link building and link
baiting, as well as affiliate marketing.
