Q: Are there any websites that you see and you think wow - their graphic design is really great right now?

A: As I have said, design is totally subjective and as such, my likes and dislikes will change by the day, or even by the minute. For instance, when a new design trend appears online, it is great, but then it becomes so over used by all of the designers out there who just emulate rather than create (you know who you are!) that what was a great idea suddenly becomes watered down and boring and can end up turning me off a site.

I like to look at a site objectively as well as an experience. If the client is someone who obviously needs a site that is function over form, then if that site offers a good solution to this I like it. Same goes for the opposite.

Q: Would you say your style is British?

A: Yes, I think it is. We were approached by a company in Florida, called Nursery Retailer, several years ago, to produce a brochure and additional collateral because we were based in the UK, and had a 'British style' they were keen to capitalise on the fact that Americans still feel that gardens and horticulture are intrinsically British and they wished to accentuate that.

That said, we do have many different cultural, and life experience, influences within our teams, which again gives the client some fresh ideas and perspectives, but we always objectively look at a solution or concept as a whole before sending this out to a client.

Q: Who or what inspires the design work you do at AFIS?

A: Having already mentioned clichés quite a lot, is it appropriate to say that the client is the major source of inspiration? - I hope so, because that is the truth really, it is the client that gets us fired up, they are the source of initial discussion and brief - thereafter, we keep our eyes open, discuss attributes and directions as a team, feedback with client and then implement those ideas into a polished solution.
This approach is really working for us at the moment!

On a more individual and personal level though, everyone has different aspects of life that can inspire them, whether it be a nice relaxing evening with friends, something that happens on a bus, bizarre experiences, meeting an interesting person…inspiration is not really a quantifiable thing, it just happens. We are just lucky that it seems to happen on a regular basis within our team!
